Beaches, and Buckets and Grabbers - OH MY! How to Fight Dirty Against Plastic-Pollution
According to statistics from 2024, at least 14 million tons of plastic end up in the ocean every year. The amount of trash on beaches is staggering. During the 2021 International Coastal Cleanup in the United States, approximately 3 million waste items were collected, including 500,000 cigarette butts, food wrappers, and plastic bottle caps.
That's why Conservation Heroes like our next guest are so important! Meet Timothy Arnold (better known as Mr. Tim), the founder of Tybee Clean Beach. This much-needed nonprofit organization - also known as Fight Dirty Tybee - was started with a simple premise: get a group of people together that are fiercely determined to clean up Tybee Island, arm them with grabbers and buckets, and hit the beach frequently – several times a month – to get that trash off the beach. After they remove the trash, they often sort it, count it, and store it until it’s time to reuse, recycle, or make art with what they collect.
